Thanks to the Civil War, many more women found their place in the workforce. Before the Civil War, women were only one fourth of the manufacturing work force in the North, and after they made up one third.
Men usually provided for the family, but when they were gone women found jobs to take their place. Women not only helped with manufacturing, but also with jobs like government civil service and agricultural work. Many women worked in war related industries, such as munitions factories, because the war raised the demand so much.
Some women even took jobs in the government in Washington D.C., that were previously held by men.
