Before the Civil War, the role of women in the home was to cook for the family and clean the house. However, when the husbands, brothers, and fathers went to fight in the war, the women took over their responsibilities as leaders of the house.
Some women's homes were even used as hospitals, taking in wounded soldiers. They would nurse the wounded and provide them with food.
Women also planted gardens of fruit and vegetables for the troops. They would can the food and send it off to the front lines, usually as part of a ladies' aid society.
